THAT ONE TIME I FLEW A DRONE OVER LADY LIBERTY

AUG 2018

If you would have asked me exactly one year ago if I would be sitting on the bow of a 55ft yacht that was now my home, cruising past Lady Liberty with New York City ahead of me, I would have laughed in your face…or more like your chest, unless I was standing on a step ladder. You get the picture. Yet here I am, doing just that. The air is brisk and fresh out on the sound, which is a very foreign type of New York air to me. I am used the to steamy manhole, taxi laden, people smoking, pizza making type of New York air.

I turn to Braden and say, “wouldnt it be so rad if I could throw my drone up over the Lady Liberty and get a shot of the boat with the statue in the back ground?” He was not about to say no, so we got my drone out and launched it from the bow. No more than five minutes after I launched the drone the Coast Guard called us on the VHF radio. An older man replied “Mermaid Monster did you get your shot?” We hesitantly replied “yes we did.” He paused for a second and then replied, “good, now don’t do that again.” I then realized that I was flying in restricted airspace. Little did I know there are Coast Guard boats with mounted guns ready to bring down any suspicious aircrafts. Oops. I did get the shot and it is a darn good one.
